Braeside Day 2

We spent virtually the whole day out and about, walking roughly 5 miles and taking in some gorgeous scenery in private woodlands.

Keith, our Braeside instructor, led us down the canal and when we reached a clearing off the track, the children played a game to get them thinking about oxygen and trees - they had to run without breathing!!

Whilst they were walking, the children had bug pots and could collect small creatures to look at closer and they also had to identify leaves, which got particularly exciting as they spotted all of our class names.

After a picnic lunch by the stream, the children learnt about the artist Andy Goldsworthy and created their own natural art pieces using the things they found around them like leaves, petals and twigs.

Braeside Day 1

Our day began by making pizzas at Pizza Express in Devizes. The children learnt how to prepare the dough and then cover with toppings. When we arrived at Braeside we had a pizza picnic lunch in the barn.

After lunch, we split up and the children completed the low ropes course and a round of problem solving activities around the grounds. 

After our dinner, we had a super evening of singing around the campfire (thanks to Mrs Phillips) and had melted marshmallows to finish off.

I have over 150 photos just from our first day here and I will think of a way to share them with you and the children once we are back to school.

The Great Big Neston Ride - Event Rules

Event Rules

1.     Helmets must be worn at all times by all participants when riding on the track

 

2.     All bikes, scooters, roller blades and any other modes of wheeled transport must be in roadworthy condition

 

3.     No motorised vehicles are allowed on track

 

4.     Adults are responsible for the behaviour and safety of any children they accompany to the event

 

5.     Children leaving the track into the car park area must be accompanied by an adult

 

6.     All participants must travel in a clockwise direction around the track

 

7.     An area for learners/less confident/younger riders will be coned off on the left-hand side of the home straight, so when entering the home straight riders completing laps must keep to the right of the track.

 

8.      Ensure you take care when crossing the track

 

9.     Please ensure all litter is put in the bins provided or taken away with you

The Great Big Neston Ride returns for 2016

Come and join us on the famous Castle Combe Race Circuit this Friday (17th June) 6-8pm.

For one evening only, Neston School has the famous race track to itself and we need as many people as possible to come and help us fill it and make it a great evening of cycling, scooting, blading and socialising!

The BBQ will be fired up, so bring a picnic blanket and enjoy a great start to the weekend.

There is a 1.78 mile race track for the confident cyclers, and there is a great home straight for learners to enjoy practicing on too. So it really is a family event for all ages.

Please join us and help make Neston’s School’s second Big Ride a great success. All money raised goes to the school.

Tickets are still available from class reps and will be on sale at Castle Coombe race track on the evening of the event too.

£3 per adult and £2 per child

Please invite your family and friends along too.

To ensure everyone stays safe and has a great time, a few simple circuit rules are on the website and will be displayed at the event too, please take a couple of minutes to read them.

FAQs

I don’t have a bike rack

You can still come and join the fun. If you can’t fit bikes in the car, then bring blades or scooters. It’s great fun, no matter what your wheels!

My children are a bit wobbly on a bike, should we still come along?

This event is for all ages and capabilities. As well as having the whole 1.78 mile circuit, there is a great home straight which is brilliant for learners too.

Do we have to wear helmets?

Yes please. We want everyone to enjoy this great event and stay safe too. Please help us set a good example to the children an pop a helmet on!

Will the course be supervised?

There will be FONs marshals around the track, but you will be responsible for your children at all times.

Where is the Castle Combe Circuit?

The circuit is about 20-25 minutes from Neston (SN14 7EY). There is plenty of FREE parking when you get there.

Yellow & Green Teams Share Cricket Trophy

The KS2 (Years 3 - 6) Cricket Tournament that took place at the end of last term, was jointly won by the Green and Yellow teams after their Final was drawn and a bowl-off involving every player couldn't separate them! Here are some photos taken during the matches:

MDSA Position

First News - The Children's View

As mentioned in the FONS fundraising post, they are funding our annual subscription to First News, which costs £460 and the money you have raised is already making a difference to reading in our classrooms.

First News is the weekly national newspaper for children. It provides up-to-date articles on a range of subjects from entertainment, sport and politics, as well as covering all the major news stories from home and abroad. Our subscription includes weekly delivery of class copies of the newspaper, as well as access for teachers to the digital edition and a whole range of resources to use within the classroom. It has proved particularly useful for the teachers in Guided Reading sessions as it comes with relevant comprehension activities around the articles that week.

Review of FONS Fundraising

Hello from FONS - we would like to share our fundraising totals for the year (so far!) and inform you about the impact your support makes towards your children and the school.

The three Christmas events - The children's designed and printed Christmas cards, the two Christmas discos and the Christmas hampers raised over £500 between them. It was the first time we have split the disco into separate key stages, in light of having close to 200 pupils, and we had a lot of positive feedback from both parents and children.

FONS Chairman Martin Punter was, once again, a great quizmaster and the Quiz night raised over £400. Thank you to parents and staff who supported this event at the beginning of 2016

The Easter Egg Hunt was great fun and we raised a record amount, close to £500. A big thank you to Tracey Jewitt and her team for the revamped hunt on a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

Some of our money has been spent on the new sports tops (see Mr Howe's other blog post for photos) and stay tuned for the children's reviews of First News, also provided through FONS funding.

On behalf on FONS we would like to thank you for your continued support at these events this academic year, especially as we had to unfortunately postpone our biggest fundraiser - the Fireworks. Remember to come and get your refreshments from us on Sports Day (10th June) and keep an eye out for the return of the amazing Big Ride at Castle Combe Track.

E-Safety Magazine May Update - #DITTO Issue 1

It has been a little while since the last E-Safety newsletter was sent out but we have just received the latest (re-branded) magazine with the following message:

#DITTO is a free monthly magazine for schools and parents. The magazine is about keeping you up to date with risks, issues, advice and guidance related to keeping children safe online, commonly called e-safety or online safety, but also with a view to enjoying and learning about technology.

In the past I have tried to keep up with creating two separate newsletters; one for schools and one for parents and unfortunately this became too much. In this new magazine I briefly explain why I have now combined those newsletters into one magazine, and hopefully created something which is much more informative and useful to everybody. Please do feel free to send me feedback.
