Stone Age & Fossil Day

Added on by Andy Howe.

Before half term, Chestnut and Hazel were joined by the brilliant Andrew Skelton from Chippenham Museum and Heritage centre.

We began the day handling artefacts, thinking like historians and trying to work out what era of pre-history they came from.

After that, we finished the first session with weaving - just how they used to make their houses!

Fossils was our science topic in term 5, a really good link to the Stone Age and our over-arching topic, Similarities and Differences. The children used tools to do a sandbox dig and then they sorted the things they had found. Following that, Mr Skelton explained how things get buried and fossilised over many, many years using a 'blanket dig'.

Chestnut & Hazel's Visit to the Egg

Added on by Andy Howe.

Before half term, Hazel and Chestnut made the short trip to Bath, to the Egg Theatre, to watch a performance of Stig of the Dump. The Egg is a great venue - both classes filled up the seats and as you can see from the fantastic set, we were really close to the action.

We watched 4 actors (2 male and 2 female) and a puppet Stig perform different parts from the WHOLE story in just a few hours. The children were completely captivated thanks to the humour and the interactive singing and chanting. It was a really great way to round off all the learning we have done around Stig of the Dump in Term 5.

Icarus Artwork in Chestnut

Added on by Andy Howe.

Following our learning of the Daedalus and Icarus myth, we have been studying wing formation and sunset watercolour paintings.

It was really enjoyable to practise watercolours again and build on the skills we used to paint watercolour pictures of mountains in term 1. This time, rather than a colour wash in a single blue for the sky, we had to blend and mix red, orange and yellow to create a natural sunset. After, we looked closely at Icarus style silhouettes and had to pay close attention to the human and bird mixed-form.

I can't wait to display them around school, the effort has led to some fantastic results.

Propaganda Poster 2

Added on by Andy Howe.

Following on from the 'We can do it' poster featuring Martha, Immy made this fantastic poster about 'Careless Talk'. She made it independently during a Friday afternoon in which Chestnut class had free use of the iPads and used an app called Comic Life 3.

What a brilliant demonstration of the creativity enabled through digital literacy and combining the ease of using the in-built camera on the ipad with the effects available in the app, Immy was able to make this in a matter of minutes!

The First Butterflies

Added on by Andy Howe.

Willow, Oak and Chestnut classes each have a butterfly garden in our classrooms. This is becoming a lovely summer tradition and fits really well with our theme of survival. We received the baby caterpillars just over a fortnight ago and have been tracking their growth. The first two have come out of their chrysalides within the last 24 hours and both are in Chestnut!

Chestnut enjoying the cricket and sunshine

Added on by Andy Howe.

Chestnut class (and Hazel) have been really lucky to have the excellent Vicky, from the ECB, come in to provide cricket coaching for the past six weeks. Today we practised diamond cricket in preparation for the Key Stage 2 (years 3-6) school tournament, taking place on Wednesday 3rd June.

Please wear your team colours (same as Sports Day)

Chestnut: Area and Perimeter

Added on by Andy Howe.

We have been making use of the good weather and tackling our struggles with measuring area and perimeter of rectilinear shapes (rectangles or shapes made from rectangles, like 'L' or 'U') There is also a lot of problem solving because not all of the measurements are provided.

I loved May's explanation that area was like 'if you had a garden, then area would be how much land I have'. Following that link then perimeter could be the fence or wall around the land.
